Comparative proteomics between two Streptomyces strains

research project
This high-throughput study compared the global proteome of two strains of the Streptomyces genus, known as 'the antibiotics makers' due to their ability to produce 2/3 of the antibiotics in the market. The main goal was to identify the proteins responsible of the contrasting phenotypes of these two strains, while S. coelicolor produces antibiotics ,S. lividans accumulates lipids.
Proteins were detected using a last-generation Mass Spectrometer (TherFisher Scientific) and data analysis was carried out in R. A total of 2024 proteins were identified and 360 showed statistical differences in abundance between the strains.
The main biological insights were that S. lividans showed a glycolytic metabolism whereas the metabolism of S. coelicolor was predominantly oxidative. Key proteins were highlighted, including those involved in resistance to oxidative stress and some secondary metabolites.
