Spectroscopy method for quantification of microbial lipids

17 / 04 / 2017

tech project

The worldwide interest to produce renewable oils without mobilizing agriculture lands involves a quest to identify highly oleaginous microorganisms of potential industrial interest. In this context, there exist a need to establish a fast and reliable method to quantify the produced oils from microorganisms.

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the relevance of a spectroscopy method, the Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR), to measure bio-lipids.

The total lipid content of five Streptomyces strains was assessed with this method and validated with the classical Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Regression analysis, accuracy and standard error to the mean (SEM) metrics were carried out.

The ATR method can be used as an efficient fast screening method to identify oleaginous microorganisms by the scientific community working in the field of bio-lipids.
